Bricks Have White Powder. Brick efflorescence is a powdery white residue that accumulates on bricks, mortar, and grout, usually during the first year after construction. Although undesirable, efflorescence is usually not harmful to brick masonry.
The white powder you see is efflorescence. It often occurs when flashing, cap stones, rowlocks, chimney crowns, etc. The white material which appears on brick is a powdery mass of minerals called efflorescence.
